OleaDB has started keeping a simple count of which pages and which searches are opened. It records that a page was requested, and nothing more.

The count carries no name, no account and no full network address: only the first part of the address is kept, which identifies a network and not a visitor. No additional cookies were introduced — the site still uses only the technical ones it has always used — and none of this is shared with third parties.

The reason is practical. Knowing which searches are actually used tells us where the next work is worth doing, and which parts of the archive deserve attention first. Until now that decision rested on impressions alone.
